Columbia Gorge Hotel & Spa

In 1921 Oregon lumber magnate and philanthropist Simon Benson observed in part of the region fledgling tourism industry We have built good roads and invited the world to come view our beauty spots but we have done nothing toward taking care of them after they arrive. In response to that need Benson built the Columbia Gorge Hotel.
Our property was first described in the Lewis and Clark Journals and originally the site of Phelps Mill in the mid-1800s after which our creek is named. The mill made staves for the whiskey barrels carried by mules from Hood River to the east.
In 1904 Hood River pioneer Robert Rand capitalized on the area spectacular beauty by constructing the Wah Gwin Gwin Hotel named for the 208 waterfall on the property. The hotel operated successfully as a summer resort for 17 years until it was demolished by Simon Benson to make way for his new hotel. The layout of the grounds and trails that were developed by Rand remained the setting for the new Columbia Gorge Hotel.
The hotel was designed by Portland architect Morris H. Whitehouse as the Hotel Benson and constructed in less than a year. The Italian stonemasons brought over to work on the new Columbia River Highway built the stone walls and bridges for Bensons new Waldorf of the West. The wooden beams visible in the public areas are actually made of plaster and required five artisans working in concert to construct.
On June 21 1921 the Columbia Gorge Hotel opened with a grand reception and quickly developed an international reputation. Notable visitors in the early years included Presidents Roosevelt and Coolidge plus actresses Clara Bow Myrna Loy Jane Powell and Shirley Temple. The hotel is rumored to have been a favorite hideaway for Rudolph Valentino after whom our Valentino Lounge is named.
During the depression the hotel fell on hard times and was purchased by the Neighbors of Woodcraft as a retirement home. It remained for a quarter of a century until the ongoing restoration began in 1977. Priv

Our manicured gardens provide an amazing backdrop to an already stunning view. The gardens are filled with color and native Oregon plants which give The Columbia Gorge Hotel a distinct identity. Take time to stroll the grounds and let the world pass by. Listen to the sounds of Wah-Gwin-Gwin Falls as it tumbles 208 to the Columbia River below.
Do not miss the grounds in the winter as we set the stage for a magnificent display of over 500000 dazzling white lights.

This place is truly gorgeous (no pun intended). My wife and I were only visiting the grounds while we were in the area, but we enjoyed our brief visit. We also popped into the lobby and found it to be elegantly appointed. We'd have stayed here a night or two, but it's awfully pricey.

Absolutely breathtaking. The hotel sits right along the river and it affords an amazing view along the entire back side of the hotel. There was a wedding event going on during the whole weekend. It was pretty awesome. They had a board with the itinerary and boy does this place go all out. They had a huge BBQ going on, but despite all that it didn't seem crowded or anything. I went with my sister and we were able to have the run of the place. Exploring the outside and the interior. We had happy hour which is very reasonably priced for a higher end hotel with the views we had. The food was delicious and the staff was really friendly.

I attended a wedding here. The view is gorgeous. The waterfall off the back patio was beautiful. I had a delicious salmon meal in a small banquet room. The service was attentive and courteous. I did not stay over night.

We had a wonderful stay at the Columbia Gorge Hotel and Spa. The view is gorgeous, the service is excellent, and the restaurant is very good.

When we requested another room for my elderly mother because she was not comfortable sleeping on a roll-away bed they had provided, they promptly upgraded us to a suite where she was very comfortable.

I would stay here again, and highly recommend it.

Restoration has preserved much of the 1920s feel of the place. Staff is friendly, and the location magnificent. It is a joy to explore the grounds, or to just open the windows and let the river breeze freshen the room while you watch the scenery, including a bald eagle. We hope to return often.

This historic hotel overlooking the Columbia River at Hood River, OR has been nicely restore, including many features from the original (1921) hotel. The attention to detail begins at the gardens and extends to the front desk and bellhop service. The only flaw was the housekeeping service, doing a poor job of cleaning the room during our stay. The bar is very nice, and sitting on the balcony overlooking the river is a definite plus. The restaurant is rather pretentious, but nicely decorated in period style, but unfortunately the food doesn't keep up the standards of the hotel.

Convenient to the main road and easy to find, this hotel is a historical beauty. You'll see a stunning locale with picturesque views, great for events. The staff was helpful and pleasant. I feel like the rooms could really use some redecorating, especially new furniture. Overall it was a pleasant stay.

There's an affinity I've got with this hotel and restaurant. It was in the 80's, when a restaurateur from Washington revamped this century old hotel, brining new light and life to it. It was my privilege to have installed coffee equipment and to adjust the brewing, so as to achieve a great flavor of coffee. Though it's been awhile since I was there last, i know that it's an exquisite place and the quality of the experience can be no less now than then.

Proposed to my girlfriend here and the whole weekend was amazing. We felt secluded when we wanted to be with 5 star views of the Columbia from the cliff view. The restaurant was top notch for lunch. The staff were so nice and accomadating. We honestly felt like royalty here and it will always be a special place for us.

Nice location and tasty food. They were probably having an off night as the service team seemed very disconnected. The wait staff was very professional and friendly but items were forgotten repeatedly. Aside from that we enjoyed our dinner. The bartender that night was a joy, friendly and talkative.

My husband Brian and I discovered the hotel and its sublime grounds and views earlier and had determined to stay there one day. My sisters' visit from Texas was the perfect occasion. The hotel is of great historic and aesthetic interest. We were treated wonderfully by all the staff, starting with Kristi (sic?) at the front desk, our terrific server at dinner, Paul the gardener, and others. The hotel manager took the trouble to greet us, something I greatly appreciate. Let me single out for especial praise the concierge Rick Vaughan, who went out of his way to give us an optimal experience through his consideration, taking the time even to take photographs of our group against lovely backgrounds. And our dinner was memorable...Altogether a superb experience. Did I mention the waterfall that runs from the manicured grounds to the Columbia River? Or the sublime views from our windows?

My girlfriend and I both wish we had stayed two nights instead of one. The room was quaint with an excellent north facing few of the Columbia river. We had the window cracked in the evening so we could enjoy sounds of the waterfall in the background.

However, the blue tape over the old fire alarm system was an eyesore, and the TV remote was not programmed so we couldn't really watch TV in the morning.

The piano player & singer in the bar was so fun! The whole room was singing along at one point!

For vegetarians(us) the menu at the restaurant isn't super impressive. There were really on 2-3 options. But there's so many places in town nearby it wasn't hard to decide on a place to eat.

We stayed on a :Sunday night in March, very off-season, but the staff was exceptional, the food tasty and well-prepared, and the grounds gorgeous. Love the soft mattress, down comforter, and even a walk-in closet (with, get this, an ironing board and iron!). Just about perfect.

There are meals and places in life, that remain exquisite memories. This spectacular spot is one of them. Only stopped in for brunch and a few months later, the tastes and sights linger on.

The ingredients fresh, the servings perfect. The honey dripping on your toast and the sweet flavour of nature. The service on a scale a fussy Brit would, and does, reminisce on of an era gone by. Do yourself a favour, go.

Everything about our stay was wonderful, the rooms, the beds, the shower! Beautiful view....everything except your spa. It is horribly over-priced. $65 for a pedicure...I have had better $25 pedicures at my local salon. That needs to be addressed, otherwise totally happy.

Price for dinning was very reasonable . All the service was very welcoming and accommodating. Our room was spotless very comfortable king bed fireplace. Beautiful views of the river. The grounds are really cool, nice areas to walk around. There is a water fall. this would beautiful place for wedding. Last the spa was really good. My wife got a facial and makeup and really glowing. Very natural but I really like her light makeup. Over all we had a super relaxing time and we highly recommend for weekend get away. A beautiful hotel with an old fashion feel. They have an old fashioned elevator that is only run by the staff to haul luggage up and down the floors. Rooms are updated with the amenities and the restaurant downstairs is great.

We had a fantastic time at the Columbia Gorge Hotel. The rooms are loaded with charm and amenities, the views absolutely breathtaking. The best part, though, is the staff. They are incredibly helpful and are an integral part of the happy experience. Rick is particularly great: If I could give him ten stars I would. He helped arrange local outings, and guided us on a really fun (and spine tingling) "ghost tour" of the hotel. We've already made our reservations for next year!

This was a beautifully decorated historic hotel, in a wonderful setting above the Columbia River, and with a 100-foot waterfall in the back. The gardens on all sides were beautiful and well tended. I wandered around the garden and the cliff above the river before bed, and in the morning before I left. (There was also a bar and restaurant which I did not use.) The staff was great, and they seemed to know that their hotel was something special. Typical to several other historic hotels I have stayed in (Old Faithful Inn, Hotel Colorado, Brown Palace, Broadmoor) the rooms are smaller than modern hotels. But the beds were good and the bathrooms had been updated recently. There is a little road noise in the gardens, but not in the rooms.

Charming old hotel with a lovely view. Some updates to the carpet/rooms would be appreciated. Elevator is the original, which means you need a staff person to help operate it. The spa was wonderful.

A step back in time to the days of classic historic beauty. The staff was knowledgeable and eager to please. I loved the personal attention and the special care they provided, just for me. The room was delightful with a big 4-poster fluffy bed, Victorian touches, all without sacrificing modern conveniences, such as plugs for all our devices. The view of the river and the sound of the waterfall made our room delightful to be in, especially with the windows open to the breeze. The grounds were gorgeous and the 200' waterfall was worth the visit alone. The lounge was perfect to meet up with friends and moving out to the patio with the view of the wind surfers on the river was great. The food was excellent, as we sampled snacks at the bar, breakfast and a delicious dinner. We had easy access to many of the scenic and leisure activities located within minutes of the hotel. We had a great stay and have already recommended the hotel to friends and neighbors.

The staff was efficient and friendly. The setting is beautiful. The room was really small, but the view was wonderful. The restaurant was very good, but we didn't care for the Sunday brunch menu. That was disappointing as the celebrated Sunday brunch was one of the reasons we went there. The spa was outstanding and the prices were reasonable.

I think that $309 a night for a small room is high. All in all: 2 nights, one dinner, 2 massages and a pedicure cost us over $1100. Was it worth it? Maybe once every couple of years. There's not much to do in the town unless you wind surf.

An interesting old Victorian style hotel in a beautiful location overlooking the river. It seems to be somewhat under staffed. The old employee operated elevator is fine when the operator is available. However, he is also the bell man and sometimes is nowhere in sight. Housekeeping is timely but not attentive to small details. No coffee is available in room and not from room service until after 7AM. The lobby coffee was not out until 7:30AM at least once during our three night stay. This is a somewhat pricey hotel; The service should be a bit better.

Great location, beautiful grounds, friendly staff, dog friendly. Lot of green areas for our dog to explore and catch the ball.
Room was beautiful, the bathroom door did not close fully though, door did not fit the frame. Bathtub did not drain well and the knob for bathtub water was stuck, had to use both hands to try to jank it out. Bring your owns pillows, the ones at hotel are hard like a rock, you'd rather sleep without one. Breakfast at the restaurant (for the fee) was wonderful with the great view of the river and mountains.

I stayed at the Columbia Gorge Hotel for just one night. It is a cool, old hotel, but my T.V. only worked Analog channels and was very fuzzy. Also, in checking out, I rang the bell twice on the 3rd floor to get help with the elevator and did not get a response. I hauled my heavy bags down 2 flights of stairs. The 2 women at the front desk were not friendly and told me they did not hear the bell ring. The woman who checked me in the night before, however, was very nice. She offered to take 10% off my bill due to the T.V. situation. I felt it was overpriced!

Great old hotel, the inside is well maintained but the outside grounds were not a tidy. The staff was GREAT!!! Rick, the valet/concierge , was wonderful! He took us up in the tower and took photos for us and give us a history lesson on the Hotel. Excellent!

Loved our stay except for the extensive repair of the outside of the hotel. You had to keep all the blinds closed be seen by the workers. They worked all day and the room was dark with the blinds closed. Had paid for the view but couldn't use it at all. Good food, nice service. Should have been told before checking in about the repairs. Spoiled the other perfect stay.

I was very happy with the location of the hotel it is truly spectacular.

I was less impressed with an issue encountered immediately upon arrival to my room. I had set this surprise anniversary trip months in advance as a unique way to celebrate the event. My wife had no idea what we were doing and where we were staying until we arrived and her initial reaction was fantastic.

The problem occurred when we got to our room and my wife was looking around and saw a entire egg shell sitting on the bed between the spring and the mattress. Unfortunately it really grossed her out which took away from what could have been spectacular initial impression. It muted the joy that could have been.

We called the front desk and they had it taken care of immediately but the damage had been done. They offered a bottle of champagne as compensation for the issue, but I don't drink and the lingering response of being grossed out within 2 minutes of entering our room made it less than ideal.

I felt the hotel could have done more to compensate for their failure to clean the room properly and responsibility for my wife's initial impression. We make these trips and spend money for special experiences and had there not been an egg in the bed then it would have been much more satisfying.

Aside from the egg incident the staff was engaging and very nice and the hotel is really special.

Nice stay and a beautiful place. Had huge I ssues with spa. Made spa reservation months in advance. Arrived and I wasn't on the books. That evening made new reservations for a morning spa session. I was told that if there was a problem they would let me know. Showed up for massage and no one there. I wasn't on books. Other than the spa my group had a nice stay.

We had a lovely time. Even though we were there before the season "officially" began, the staff was courteous, friendly and outgoing. The CGH had amazing views, authentic feel, and gregarious wait staff. Although not all Spa services were available, (they said they should be starting in April), the massage and facial were very relaxing. This place has great charm and sure to impress your romantic partner. Also, the concierge Rick was great and I look forward to taking the full facility tour from him in the future. We also did the brunch - highly recommend staying here for the full experience.

Our room was very cozy with a comfy bed and pillows. The shower was adequate. The views were really nice even though we were there off season. Very relaxing and quiet getaway.

The hotel is older but very cozy. Road noise is not an issue with the close proximity to I84. The staff are extremely friendly and really make sure you have an enjoyable stay. The toilet paper is 2 ply, but not that crappy sand paper that you find in a public library. Will be coming back.

Wonderful service. All the staff are extremely helpful, friendly, and accommodating. Our room had a beautiful view of the Columbia River. A lovely stay overall.

All the staff were very friendly and accommodating, happy people all around, including the bell hop, front desk, waiters, maids and even the piano player! The food and wine are excellent and I consider myself a snob when it comes to the finer things in life.....that's why I enjoyed this venue so much. They know how to make you feel special. By the way, the gorge is breathtaking in October!
