Green Key Eco-Rating Program 3

With more than 1,200 hotels certified in Canada since its inception in the 1990s, the Green Key Eco-Rating Program awards hotels an environmental rating of one to five Green Keys. Green Key members are then given guidance on how to "unlock" opportunities to reduce operating costs and environmental impacts - and in turn earn more keys.

The Green Key audit looks at nine major areas of sustainable hotel operations:
• Energy conservation
• Water conservation
• Solid waste management
• Hazardous waste management
• Indoor air quality
• Community outreach
• Building infrastructure
• Land use
• Environmental management

My wife, our 2 teenagers, and I had an Amazing stay at the Atrium Resort July 30-Aug 2. The place seemed very clean on the inside. The outside could use a little work (no different than a lot of hotels). The inside decor was appropriate, warm, and comfortable. Some of the furniture in the lobby and the room were "older" however no stains or rips. It seems they have gone through a renovation, and it looks good. They are 2 blocks down and 1 block over to access the beach. Not a long walk, however if you need to wait at each crosswalk to get your signal to go; it could take awhile. They do offer some amenities that are consistent with a 3 star hotel. Such as, a pool, hot tub, fitness room (3 cardio machines), craft time for youngsters, and a laundry room with free washers and dryers. There is a restaurant/bar "21st Street Seafood" next door that opens at 7am for breakfast. It’s a typical beach restaurant feel (laid back atmosphere) with good food and seafood. Guests can save 20% with a card that you get at the front desk. The Atrium also had discounted tickets for local attractions. Perhaps one of the best amenities is having two sister properties in VA Beach as well. All guests can use the facilities of each of the resorts (Ocean Sands & Ocean Key). This came in handy to use other pools and to use other parking in VA Beach. All the resorts are similar in decor. The best part of the Atrium Resort was the staff. Thanks to Maxine, Janet, Ali, and the manager Bill for being so friendly and helpful. Also, the maintenance and cleaning staff were great. The staffs at the Ocean Sands and the Ocean Keys were also friendly and helpful. This was the best 3 star hotel I have ever stayed in.

Clean, nice rooms. Fully loaded kitchen. Even though it isn't right on the beach, it's a close walk to everything! Great for the price. There's no outdoor pool and the indoor pool is in the middle of the building in kind of an awkward place. That's my only complaint but that's minor. Would definitely stay here again!!

Stayed here for a long weekend (Thursday-Sunday) in July. It was a friends trip, and I felt four adults fit comfortably in one suite. Two slept in the bedroom and two of us were on the sofa bed. The kitchen is fully stocked with pretty much anything you would need to whip up a meal in the room, and the large refrigerator was a nice touch! We didn't end up using the pool, but a lot of families seemed to be enjoying it. The pool is a bit small, but I'm sure it's fun for kids to splash around in. My only complaints are that check-in was a bit lengthy, and there is only one elevator, which can be especially difficult when it's busy during check-out time as hotel workers are using the same elevator to get where they need to go. Other than that, we had a great time and would definitely visit again. It's a very quick walk to the beach and boardwalk. Be sure to check out 21st Street Seafood next door! EXCELLENT specials, like a $2.99 breakfast Monday-Friday! :)
